Congrats to the Aussies. In fairness other than the first 15 mins they were always in control of the game. They started with 3 at the back, only Viduka up front, and struggled. They brought Kewell on after about 25 mins and he turned the game for them. He was very good. Stan didn't come on, he didn't play in Montevideo in the 1st leg either, so either Guus Hiddink doesn't rate him or he's not 100%. Chuffed that they made it, more so due to the way uruguay treated Australia 4 years ago, when the players were forced to abandon pre match training due to the hostile fans. First half tonight we saw the typical South American, falling over in the wind, clutching his leg and rolling over several times.......unbelievable. Great goal by Bresciano, and although Uruguay had one or two good chances, you always felt it was Australias night. Onto penalties, and Schwarzer saved their first effort. But he kept the best for last. Diving to his left with the ball going above him, he stretches his arm straight up and knocks it over...brilliant save in tremendous pressure circumstances. Saw Stan going mad with the rest of them and Australia are now in the world cup finals for the first time in 32 years. One negative thing i'll say is I thought they were naive at times, wasteful of dead ball situations and hopeless at defending high balls. But tonight is their night......well done Australia! |

But let's not forget our other player Walter Pandiani who will at this moment be devastated that his country didn't get to the World Cup. When he came to Blues he hoped that playing regularly and scoring for us would get him back into the international reckoning in time for the World Cup. Sadly it hasn't worked out for him. |

Oh, but its getting so dull beating the Aussies at EVERYTHING Never mind, I hear they have got a great chance of winning the World Tiddlywinks Championship next year - if England don't take part! |

Great result for Australia, wonderful performance against tough opposition who used every possible dirty trick. Excellent game again by Schwatzer and wonderful first game by Viduka. It's a big result for Australian Soccer as the code is only the 4th ranking football code in Australia but this should give it a real boost. Now for the dream - Australia v England in the final in Germany. |

Strange how Football is the 4th isn't it! AFL, league and Union are all ahead of 'Soccer', yet Soccer is the biggest participated sport in the country! Why is that do you think? |

I suppose it's because kids who are good at sport can earn more money playing rugby league or AFL. Oz getting to the world cup final might encourage more kids to want to make their career in football. |

This is right, although not quite the whole story. Soccer is close to the being second most popular code in every State of Australia. AFL dominates in four States but the two rugby codes rate zero there. Rugby (both codes) dominates in NSW and Queensland and AFL football is very small. I believe soccer has more players from tiny kids to adults than all the other codes put together. Now we have the A League, which is very good, and have finally qualified for a World Cup, you just watch our great game go!! |
